WHAT'S THIS ABOUT
- To revise points for teams receiving a forfeit.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES
- Works out an improved way to award points to team receiving a forfeit which does not unreasonably disadvantage other teams in each competition.
DISCUSSION
- Forfeits numbered 22 in season 2022/23 out of over 500 total matches in 12 different grades and competitions. This is really a minor problem in statistical terms but it's important to get the rules right.
- Ideally there should be no forfeits at all but that's not very likely to happen.
A detailed complaint was received from a club President which pointed
out the inequity of the forfeits points rule when matches in the same
round are weather affected.
- As per Regulation 11.6 and 11.7, team which received a forfeit were due maximum points for the round.
- The other two matches in the round happened to be a "juicy" outright and a washed out draw.
- The team receiving the forfeit was awarded more than 15 points while three other teams scored no more than 5 points and the outright winner received 15 points too.
- That is a big difference.
- The forfeiting team gets 0 points and the bills for the match.
- By contrast, if the other games were both 'normal' first innings results, the points would be split so that half the other teams in the grade scored about 7-10 points and 2 teams scored their bonus points (2, 3 or 4 or so). The team that receiving the forfeit would get 8-10 points or so.
- This is a smaller difference.
- There might be several ways to 'fix' this disparity.
Option 1: Award average points scored by all other teams in the grade not involved in the forfeit to the team receiving the forfeit.
Let's assume a 6 team Saturday competition...On Saturdays, if there's an outright, a draw and a forfeit in a round, the team receiving the forfeit would get the average of about 16 for an outright win, about 4-5 bonus points for an outright loss and 2 teams who got 2 points each for a draw. So that would be about 6 points. On Saturdays, if there are all first innings results apart from a single forfeit, the team receiving a forfeit would get the average of two first innings wins (about 2 x 7-8 points) and two first innings losses (about 2 x 2-3 points). So that would be about 5 points.
On Sundays losing teams typically score 0 points in each game since there are no bonus points for runs and wickets. But there's a Super Bonus point for a big win.On Sundays, each winning team gets 4 points (or 5 if they score a Super bonus point). For each team receiving a forfeit the average points of all other teams works out to 2 points (or 2 and a bit). This makes the award of average points for receiving a forfeit on Sundays worth about half points for a normal win. That's problematic...
On Sundays, teams receiving a forfeit when there are two other 'normal' wins would get either 4 or 4 and a bit points. On Saturdays, if there's an outright, a draw and a forfeit in a round, the team receiving the forfeit would get the average of the only win. So that would be about 16 points. This gets us back where we started. That's problematic...
Option 3 Award average of non-zero points scored in the round to the team receiving the forfeit.
- This means ignoring the zero points scores.
- On Sundays, in a 6 team grade, teams receiving a forfeit would typically get the average of two win points (about 4 or 4.5).
- On Sundays if there was forfeit, a washout draw and a win, the team receiving the forfeit would get (4+2)/2 = 3 points.
- On Saturdays, if there's an outright, a draw and a forfeit in a round, the team receiving the forfeit would get the average of the outright win, the outright loss and 2x draws.... which would be about (16+5+2+2) /4 = 6 and a bit points.
- On Saturdays, if there are all first innings results apart from a single forfeit, the team receiving a forfeit would get the average of two first innings wins (about 2 x 7-8 points) and two first innings losses (about 2 x 2-3 points). So that would be about 5 points.
- On Saturdays, if there are all washout draws except for the forfeit, then the team receiving the forfeit would receive the average of 4 draw points. (That's 2 points for all teams except the forfeiting team.)
We'll be voting on Option 3.
Note that changing forfeit points will severely mess up late season points chases. A mid table team that is hoping for outright points against a weak team in Round 13 or 14 may end up really annoyed if that team decides to forfeit. This change might mean outright points for the forfeit gets reduced to just 6 or 7 points maybe.
If this worries you then you might consider voting NO on Item N.

PROPOSED CHANGES (Option 3)
OLD REGULATIONS | What does this mean?/Why is this no good? | PROPOSED NEW WORDING |
POINTS FOR FORFEITED MATCHES | - | POINTS FOR FORFEITED MATCHES |
11.6 Teams receiving forfeits may be allocated the maximum number of points scored by any other team in that grade for the match. | "may" can be changed to "will"... is there any point in soft pedalling this? | 11.6 Teams receiving forfeits will be allocated the average of all non-zero points scored by other teams in that grade for the match. |
11.7 Maximum points means match points plus bonus incentive points. | This definition is changed. | 11.7 Average of all non-zero points means the total of all match points and any bonus points scored divided by the number of other teams which scored more than zero points in the round. |
